Defending champion Novak Djokovic looked in ominous form on the way to his late-night, second-round victory over Ryan Harrison under the Centre Court roof.

The Serb — determined to launch another bid for all four Grand Slam titles in a year after being beaten by Rafael Nadal in the French Open final — completed his 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory just before 10pm. He said: “I am pleased with my performance and I played really well.”

Harrison, the 20-year-old world No48, forced Djokovic to produce some of his best tennis, competing strongly in each set, but Djokovic took the break points on offer to emerge a straight sets winner.

“Ryan performed well but I got the crucial breaks and it was a close match out there,” added the world No1.

“I haven’t played under the closed roof for a couple of years and the conditions are different and you must adjust your movement.

“I am honoured to play on the most recognised court in our sport and so much history has been created out there. You can feel the energy when you walk onto the court.”
