Eight-time Grand Slam winner Jimmy Connors has offered to coach Nick Kyrgios.

On Monday, Kyrgios was banned for eight weeks for giving up in his Shanghai Masters match against Mischa Zverev.

But Connors, no stranger to controversy during his playing days, believes he can help the 21-year-old. He tweeted: “Kyrgios — you want to be the best — come see me. You will learn to play, excite, and to win! It’s your choice — or just be mediocre! gd luck.”

Connors coached Andy Roddick from 2006 to 2008 and guided him to the US Open Final although his coaching stint with Maria Sharapova in 2013 lasted just one match.

Kyrgios’s ban could be cut to three weeks if he visits a sports psychologist but in a Twitter Q&A yesterday he suggested he was unlikely to do that.
