Maria Sharapova's two-year doping ban has been reduced to 15 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following appeal.

The 29-year-old was suspended earlier this year after she tested positive for meldonium at January's Australian Open.

The International Tennis Federation handed her a two-year ban in June, but she later launched an appeal to the CAS in the hope it would be reduced.

The drug had only just been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list when it was detected in Sharapova's system and the tennis star claimed she was not aware it had become prohibited as of January 1, 2016.

She added that she had been taking meldonium since 2006 and while an ITF panel found that the Russian did not intend to cheat, they said she was at "very significant fault" when handing her a two-year ban earlier this year.

But today's ruling means Sharapova will be able to return to the court in April as June's suspension was backdated to January 26.

In a statement on here wesbite, Sharapova said: "I am counting the days until I can return to the court.

"I have learned from this, and I hope the ITF has as well. CAS concluded that 'the Panel has determined it does not agree with many of the conclusions of the [ITF] Tribunal'."
