Novak Djokovic is hoping fellow Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams completes a rare Grand Slam of Slam titles by winning the US Open in New York in September.

Williams’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Garbine Muguruza in the women’s final means she holds all four Slam titles — a Serena Slam — as she won the US Open last year. If she retains the trophy, however, she will join the elite of the sport by recording a Slam of Slams.

Djokovic, who beat Roger Federer to retain his Wimbledon singles title, said: “Serena has achieved something incredible and I hope she achieves the golden slam and I hope to follow her.”

Williams has now won 21 Grand Slam titles, with only Steffi Graf (22) and Margaret Court (24) ahead of her. The win over Muguruza in Saturday’s final gave Williams her sixth Wimbledon singles title, three short of Martina Navratilova and two shy of Graf. To further enhance her reputation as the best woman currently on the WTA tour, she has won 28 Grand Slam matches in a row and, at 33, she is the oldest woman to win a major title in the Open era.

Graf won a Slam of Slams in 1988 and the fact that no one has achieved it since then puts into context what a difficult feat Williams is attempting. With Spain’s Muguruza proving she can at least give Williams a game, the march towards her target may not be as easy as it appears to those outside the game, but it would take a big dip in the World No1’s form to allow her dream to become a nightmare in New York.

Williams is acting very cool, but there will no doubt be plenty of nerves at the US Open as history beckons. She said: “I feel like I will be okay. I feel like if I can do the ‘Serena Slam’ then I will be okay heading into the Grand Slam. Like I always say, there’s 127 other people in the draw that don’t want to see me win. It’s nothing personal, they just want to win. I had a really tough draw at Wimbledon and this gives me confidence that if I had this draw, I can do it again. I will just do the best I can.

“I honestly wouldn’t have thought last year after winning the US Open I would win the ‘Serena Slam’ at all. It’s super-exciting. I just knew I wanted to win Wimbledon this year.”
