Rafael Nadal: French Open win counts for nothing

Rafael Nadal insists his French Open final victory over Robin Soderling will count for nothing when he takes on the Swede today in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Since a tempestuous Wimbledon meeting in 2007, when Soderling's behaviour riled Nadal, who won the match, the pair have played four times and shared the victories.

Soderling defeated Nadal at the World Tour Finals at London's O2 last November, but at the start of this month it was the Spaniard who came out on top in a more important match, the Roland Garros final.

"I think this match is completely different," Nadal said. "Playing on grass is nothing like playing on clay. I think his game is good on every surface.

"It probably is even more difficult to stop him here, because the ball goes faster and it's going to be very difficult to return and difficult to stop him from the baseline.

"But I'm going to try."

Soderling's countrymen Bjorn Borg and Stefan Edberg were Wimbledon winners, five times and twice respectively.

Just one triumph at the All England Club would suffice for Soderling, although he is already in uncharted territory having never previously reached the last eight.

"I remember when I was a kid, I was watching Edberg playing against Boris Becker in the finals," sixth seed Soderling recalled.

"I always loved to watch the bigger tournaments, especially Wimbledon, such an old tournament with a lot of tradition.

"So it's nice to be in the last eight in this one."

The 25-year-old added: "If I had to pick one I really wanted to win, I would pick Wimbledon."
