Wimbledon 2018 in numbers: Tennis fans will drink 29,000 bottles of champagne and eat 34,000 kilos of strawberries

Wimbledon fans are expected to drink a staggering 320,000 glasses of Pimm's and 29,000 bottles of champagne at this year’s championships.

More than 2,000 staff will serve thirsty punters over the 14 day tournament in south west London.

As tennis buffs begin to queue in the days before the event the Evening Standard breaks down the tournament in numbers:

The crowds

In 2017, 473,372 people flocked to watch matches over 13 days.

Lucky ticket holders will fill 14,979 seats in centre court.

11,393 people will fill court one.

And a staggering 39,000 spectators will be in the grounds at any one time.

Spectators will drink:

330,000 cups of tea and coffee

The grounds

More than 50,000 flowers will be planted over the 13.5 acre site.

Centre Court

The bowl measures 110m long x 119m wide x 19m high. Grass covers 41m x 22m.

290 million tennis balls could be crammed into the court with the roof closed.

7,500 Wimbledon umbrellas would be needed to cover the same area as the retractable roof.

The balls

54,250 yellow balls will used during the tournament.

They will be caught by 250 ball boys and girls and handed out by nine distributors.

Wimbledon employs:

192 Court attendants

31 Groundstaff

22 Physio and massage therapists

2 Podiatrists

200 honorary stewards and 613 stewardds from London Fire Brigade and other service employees

As well as the tens of thousands of people in the stands, millions of people will watch on TV.

Last year, 24.1 million people streamed games live on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport.

The men’s final was watched by 6.4 million people and the 4.7 million tuned in to watch the men’s final.
