Wimbledon intruders foil security net for Queen’s first visit in 33 years

Holding court: the Queen arrives at Wimbledon on her first trip to the tennis championships for 33 years
10 April 2012

Intruders managed to get into the All England Club ahead of the Queen's first visit to the Wimbledon championships in 33 years, it was revealed today.

A "number of people" gained access to the site before being caught and removed.

The breach came despite a security clampdown ahead of the Queen's arrival in SW19 today.

Police said the incident, which occurred just over three weeks ago, would form part of their "intelligence" in helping to make the championships secure.

After the trespassers got on to the site, security levels were heightened at the club, with extra bag searches and staff told to be "extra vigilant".

A Scotland Yard source told the Standard: "Some people got in and they should not have done. They didn't get very far and were turned away.

"We don't know who they were or what they wanted. This could have been serious. It formed part of our intelligence for the securing of the event."

A source at the All England Club confirmed the breach, saying "a security guard let them in and should not have done.

"They were on CCTV the whole time. They were asked to leave and they did."

A spokesman for Wimbledon said police were not called at the time but were informed later and details of the intruders were passed on. He said: "It was a security irregularity."
