Angelique Kerber's possible route to the Wimbledon final

Angelique Kerber comes into the tournament in the curious position of being top seed, but not amongst the favourites for the Wimbledon title.

A historically poor Wimbledon record, despite reaching the Final last year, coupled with some recent shock defeats means many are predicting an early exit for the world No1.

Lucie Safarova would pose something of a banana skin in Round three; the experienced Czech has made the semi-finals here before and is a consistent performer on grass.

Garbine Muguruza would then provide a more dynamic and athletic test, with 2015’s runner-up some people’s pick for this year’s dark horse.

If she made it to the semi-finals, Kerber would likely be the outsider in matches against Pliskova and Kvitova, but she certainly has the quality to go all the way and anyone underestimating her may do so at their peril.

A Final match-up with Kvitova would promise to be a classic, with the pair tied at five apiece in their head-to-head, although they are yet to meet on grass.
