Bethanie Mattek-Sands thanks well-wishers after horror knee injury as she awaits scans results

Bethanie Mattek-Sands was waiting today to find out the severity of her injury after a horror fall during her singles match at Wimbledon.

The American could be heard screaming out on Court 17 as her right knee gave in during an approach shot against Sorana Cirstea yesterday.

She was treated for 25 minutes on court before being taken to hospital where she was further attended to overnight.

The extent of her injury is not known but, in a statement today, the WTA said: “Bethanie is undergoing more scans this morning and we should know more within the next few hours.”

The 32-year-old has been inundated with messages from well-wishers on social media and the WTA statement continued: “Bethanie of course thanks everyone for their kind wishes and messages of support.”

French player Kristina Mladenovic claimed the courts have become dangerous because the hot weather has caused large patches of grass to wear away.

But the All England Club said: “The Grand Slam supervisor, Pam Whytcross, and assistant referee, [Denise Parnell], attended Court 18 during the Mladenovic versus [Alison] Riske match, inspected it, and in their experienced view judged it playable as per normal.”
