Johanna Konta consoled a tearful Donna Vekic after an epic 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 second round victory on Centre Court, in what will be one of the defining images of Wimbleon 2017.

It was a thrilling contest that belied its early tournament standing, with Konta saving two break points in the final set that would have left the Croatian serving for the match.

These two met in the final of the Aegon Open last month, with the Britain losing to the 21-year old on that day.

They pair know each other well, as Vekic used to train in the UK when she was younger.

“I have known Jo for years,” Vekic said before the tie.

“I am not going to say we are best friends but we are friendly and she is a very nice girl.”

Despite Konta’s consolatory graciousness in defeat, it is unlikely that Vekic will want to see her again soon after such an agonising defeat.
