Thomson: Aussies should create own Ashes

13 April 2012

Jeff Thomson will lead the applause if Australia create their own Ashes after the final Test at The Oval.

"I think it's a great idea," said Thommo, the former fast bowler. "It doesn't matter how many series we win, or by what margin, the original Ashes look as though they will stay at Lord's for ever. So let's make our own Ashes, and then challenge England to take them off us when they come to Australia a year or so from now."

The world champions made their latest unsuccessful bid to relieve Lord's of the famous little urn after winning a seventh consecutive series against England.

Captain Steve Waugh appealed for the real Ashes - created more than 100 years ago and kept in the Lord's museum - to be handed over following his team's victory at Trent Bridge.

The authorities continue to insist, however, that one of sport's most famous prizes must stay where it is.
