Threat to US football team over payment to players

The United States football team, poised to reach a fifth successive World Cup finals, are embroiled in a pay row.

The US National Team Players' Association have rejected an offer from the US Soccer Federation to go to independent mediation.

The players have been without a contract since December 2002 and want increased appearance fees and bonuses.

The US begin the final round of CONCACAF regional qualification away to Trinidad and Tobago on 9 February but officials have threatened to use replacement players.
