Tim and Greg through to quarters

13 April 2012

Tim Henman comprehensively beat Arnaud Clement to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Davidoff Swiss Indoor Championship in Basel today.

The British No1 took the first set 6-4 and then found himself with three-match points at 5-4 in the second.

He did not need them, however, as his French opponent hit a right-handed return into the net.

Henman, who beat Andre Agassi two years ago to win the tournament and was beaten in last year's final by Slovakian Karol Kucera said: "It meant that little bit extra because I did not drop my serve and that was very satisfying."

Meanwhile, Greg Rusedski also reached the last eight when he ended his losing streak against Richard Krajicek.

Rusedski, who had not beaten his opponent since the 1997 US Open in New York, overcame the Dutchman in three sets to take his career record against the former Wimbledon champion to 6-4.

Krajicek won the first set convincingly 6-2, but the British No2 then managed to get his game together to take the second 7-6 - winning the tie break 7-5. He went on to complete a memorable victory by taking a close third set 7-5.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Martina Hingis breezed past Elena Dementieva of Russia in just 14 minutes in the first set, but toiled for the next two before winning 6-0, 6-7, 7-5 to reach the semi-finals of the Kremlin Cup today.

The defeated Russian said: "At 4-4 in the decisive set, I was waiting for Hingis' faults, and it was my worst mistake in the match."

Also on Thursday, fourth-seeded Anna Kournikova of Russia struggled to beat wildcard compatriot Vera Zvonareva 7-6, 6-4, to reach the tournament's quarterfinals for the first time since 1995.

Kournikova, ranked 11th, lost the two opening games at love, then came back from love-40 to break her opponent in the next game only to lose her serve in the sixth game.

In the men's second round David Prinosil of Germany fired 12 aces to beat Levy Harel of Israel 6-3, 6-0. Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden upset sixth-seeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
