Teenage half-back Sam Tomkins scored five tries on his debut as chastened Wigan took their 'Millennium Magic' frustrations out on hapless National League part-timers Whitehaven in a mismatch of a Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth-round tie on Monday night.

Humiliated by arch-rivals St Helens in the Cardiff carnival last weekend the former 'cup kings' knew they owed their disgruntled supporters an apology.
