Top marks for Carter

12 April 2012

Dan Carter admitted it felt like his "first day at school" as he led Perpignan to a 26-20 Heineken Cup victory over Leicester on Sunday.

The New Zealand fly-half passed the test with flying colours after joining Perpignan on a six-month deal, scoring 16 points on his debut in Europe's premier club competition.

"I'm pleased with how the game went and to beat a team of Leicester's quality in my first game was great," he said. "I felt extra pressure on me, it was like my first day at school, so I'm glad to have got the first game out of the way."

Leicester centre Dan Hipkiss was proud of the Tigers' display in France and insisted their Heineken Cup campaign is still alive.

He said: "It would have been easy to roll over in this game, but that's not what we're about.

"If a few decisions and fumbles had gone for us, this game could have gone either way, but we're not too far off from getting the big result in Europe and will learn from this experience.

"We're still in it with that bonus point."
