Tottenham clash falls foul of weather

Tottenham's FA Cup third round clash with Coventry has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Meanwhile, manager Glenn Hoddle today vowed his team would overcome the loss of banned skipper Teddy Sheringham as they embark on a crucial week for the club.

Sheringham is serving a three-match suspension for violent conduct after being sent off for allegedly throwing a punch at Ipswich defender John McGreal in their Premiership clash at White Hart Lane just before Christmas.

Tottenham's appeal against referee Mike Riley's red card decision was rejected by the Football Association's video advisory panel and the official.

Sheringham will now miss next week's Worthington Cup semi-final, first leg against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the return match with Ipswich.

But Hoddle said: "Teddy's suspension is a big blow to us but we will get on with things like other clubs do.

"Teddy is important for us but we have enough good players in the squad to get through these next three games.

"It's an opportunity for someone else to grab their chance in his absence."

The Spurs manager, who is determined chase a European place through as many routes as possible, has told his players to forget any thoughts of Wednesday's Worthington Cup semi-final tie with Chelsea.

Hoddle added: "It is important that we don't focus all our energies on the semi-final and believe that the Worthington Cup is the main prize for us.

"I've told the players that if we were out of the Worthington Cup, tomorrow's game would have been a massive one for us.

"We must not trip up against Coventry because this competition is one of our routes into Europe. We have not spoken about Wednesday's game because we need to be focused on the FA Cup as well.

"I love the FA Cup and believe it is the best domestic trophy to win in the world.

"There's a few teams facing a potential banana skin like us. Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham all have tricky games but that's what makes this competition so wonderful.

"This club has a lot of history and tradition in the FA Cup and we need to have a good run in the competition as we have done in the League Cup.

"Our goal of getting into Europe is still alive on all three fronts and we have to be resilient tomorrow because we don't just want to be left chasing a European place via the Premiership."
