Tourists wait for hearing date

14 April 2012

Pakistan expect to discover on Friday when Inzamam-ul-Haq's delayed hearing into charges of ball-tampering and bringing cricket into disrepute can take place.

The tourists' coach Bob Woolmer admitted that the furore which has followed the unprecedented abandonment of the Oval Test and placed the remainder of Pakistan's tour of England in doubt left him at one stage considering a resignation.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shahriyar Khan said: "We will know the new date of the hearing on Friday."

He also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to continuing with their tour - due to resume on Monday with a NatWest Twenty20 match against their hosts - if at all possible.

"The players did not want the sword of the hearing hanging over them - but now they have realised the importance of playing," he reported.

"We do not have any problems with the England and Wales Cricket Board, so we must continue with the tour.

"Our focus is now on the cricket."

Woolmer, meanwhile, has made it clear just how much strain he has felt personally over the past five days.

"Throughout this whole affair I have remained behind the Pakistan team and captain," said the former England batsman. I did contemplate resigning. I am 58 and at an age where I don't need these things in my career and my life.

"I was very 'down' at the time. But I feel it is important now to stay strong."
