Tricep injury forces Daley out

World champion Tom Daley pulled out of the European Championships in Budapest and may also be forced to miss the Youth Olympic Games after sustaining a tricep injury.

The 16-year-old Plymouth diver had competed on Saturday morning in the synchro preliminaries with his partner Max Brick, finishing fourth with a score of 386.58.

However, the problem became apparent and a decision was made to withdraw Daley from the final to prevent any long-term damage, and he then pulled out of Sunday's individual 10 metres platform event.

"I've damaged a tricep and have had to withdraw from the rest of the championships," Daley said. "I've seen physios and the medical team and it seems there may be a small tear which limited my diving.

"The team and I felt it was best not to risk it and completely tear the muscle which would put me out for three months and would see me miss the Commonwealth Games.

"I feel disappointed because I wanted to defend my title and that has been taken away from me. It's not fair on my synchro partner Max as we hoped to do well here.

"I'll travel to Singapore next week for the Youth Olympic Games but will see how it is before taking a decision to compete."

He will undergo a scan once in Singapore to determine his prospects of competing, and Daley has surprises up his sleeve if he gets the go-ahead.

He told BBC Sport: "I had three new dives I was going to do here and now I don't have the opportunity to do them for the first time.

"It was one of the new dives where I injured myself, but it could have been any of them. I'm going straight to the Youth Olympics on Monday and hopefully the British Olympic Association will help me get back to full fitness before next weekend."
