Understrength Scotland to tackle Belarus

Evening Standard14 April 2012

Scotland manager Walter Smith is backing his players to overcome Belarus in Minsk tonight despite missing almost an entire team through injury and suspension.

Kenny Miller (toe), Steven Pressley (knee) and Graham Alexander (thigh) all featured in Saturday's 2-0 win over Moldova, but could miss tonight's World Cup Group Five qualifier.

Smith is already without Jackie McNamara, Robert Douglas, Nigel Quashie, Gary Naysmith, David McNamee, Garry O'Connor, Stevie Crawford, Neil McCann and Brian O'Neil through injury and Paul Hartley through suspension.

But the manager was adamant he could still put out a side capable of winning tonight.

He said: "Whoever we put on the pitch we are optimistic we can do it. We have enough players to do well in this game."
