United closing in on title - Rooney

12 April 2012

Wayne Rooney has admitted Manchester United's players are starting to believe Barclays Premiership glory could soon be within their grasp.

Following United's convincing 4-1 win over Blackburn on Saturday, manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted the squad were beginning to "taste" the title, and while he refuses to take anything for granted - with Chelsea in equally good form in second place - Rooney admits things are starting to look good.

"It is getting close to the end of the season now, we are on a great run," he said. "But credit to Chelsea, they have been as well. We have the advantage being six points ahead and it will be a tight run-in as well, but it's in our favour."

Rooney has insisted his lack of goals is not a problem, as long as his team-mates go on to seal the title.

The 21-year-old's recent struggles in front of goal for both club and country have drawn widespread attention after he drew a blank in England's Euro 2008 qualification double-header against Israel and Andorra last week.

Rooney followed that with an unusually profligate performance against Blackburn.

But he is adamant his personal tally is unimportant so long as United continue their seemingly unstoppable march to the title.

Asked if his goal drought was a problem, he insisted: "No, not really. We are top of the league at the moment so I'm not really worried.

"We are playing well and scoring goals, the team is scoring goals, so that doesn't concern me.

"If I was missing chances and it cost us points of course it would be a problem. But at the minute we are winning all our games so it doesn't deter me."
