United set for £1m windfall after agreeing to let Queiroz take Portugal post

Manchester United last night agreed to release assistant manager Carlos Queiroz from his Old Trafford contract so that he can become the new coach of Portugal.


Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant met chief executive David Gill yesterday to hammer out a severance deal and is expected to be confirmed as the coach of his home country later this week.

Portugal have agreed to pay United in the region of £1million in compensation for the 55-year-old.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has denied that his club's manager Roberto Martinez is in the running to succeed Queiroz, while Barnsley manager Simon Davey has played down reports linking him with the job.
