United's longest serving player made his 100th competition appearance in the first leg of the team's last 16 first leg tie in France two weeks ago.

But with the score locked at 1-1 Giggs is struggling to overcome a calf problem in time for tomorrow night.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said today: "The blow he took on his leg in Lyon has proved a bit more severe than we thought.

"It has set him back a bit. He has not trained as much as we would like over the last few days.

"He did a bit of work on Saturday morning and a bit more this morning but he is not right."

If Giggs does not play, his place on the left side of United's midfield is likely to be taken by Portuguese youngster Nani and Rio Ferdinand is likely to be captain.

Ferdinand said today: "Lyon are obviously a good side and that is why they have got to this stage of the competition.

"But we are in good form at the moment and are feeling very confident.

"We want to win every competition we enter and this one is no different."
