United star Evra and Chelsea groundsman deny 'brawl' charges

13 April 2012

defender Patrice Evra and groundsman Sam Bethell have both denied the charges levelled against them by the Football Association over their part in the row at Stamford Bridge last season.

Evra and Bethell were involved in an angry confrontation during United's warm-down following their 2-1 defeat.

Following a lengthy investigation by the FA, both men were charged with improper conduct, while Bethell was also charged with using abusive language aggravated by reference to nationality/race.

Neither party were happy with the charges.

Evra insisted he had done nothing wrong while Chelsea were incensed at the damning accusation levelled against Bethell.

When the initial charge was raised, the Blues confirmed their commitment to anti-racism policies in the game.

'Chelsea FC condemns all forms of discrimination in football and society.

'Such allegations against our club are extremely serious and Chelsea will not be making any further comment until we have assessed all the implications of the charge.'

However, the FA feel they are sure of their ground, a position that is likely to be tested in the strongest manner possible.

Personal hearings have been requested by both Evra and Bethell, although the FA have yet to announce a date for the hearings.
