Jean van de Velde is putting his comeback from a long-standing knee injury to the test in the Madeira Open.

Van de Velde, famous for his final-hole blow-up at the 1999 Open Championship, now has to rely on invitations to compete on the European Tour.

An opening round 68 at Santo da Serra left the Frenchman four shots off the lead shared by Welshman Kyron Sullivan and New Zealand's Stephen Scahill.
