Vaughan on ICC captain award shortlist

12 April 2012

Injured England skipper Michael Vaughan has been nominated for the International Cricket Council's captain of the year award despite not playing in 2006.

Vaughan has been nominated for his role in leading England to their first Ashes series victory over Australia for 18 years in 2005. The 31-year-old has not played international cricket since last December due to a serious knee problem but has been nominated as the ICC's year runs from August 1, 2005 to August 8, 2006.

Three other England players also feature with batsmen Alastair Cook and Ian Bell and left-arm spinner Monty Panesar all nominated in the emerging player of the year category.

Neither Cook nor Panesar have played under Vaughan but both are likely to be important members of the side when England face Australia again Down Under next month. The pair both made their debuts against India earlier this year and have shone with Cook scoring three Test centuries and Panesar proving a match-winner in the series against Pakistan.

Bell made a successful return to the side in the second half of this summer and scored three centuries against Pakistan.

The trio will be up against Pakistan paceman Mohammad Asif - who recently tested positive for a banned steroid - for the award.

Vaughan's rivals for the captaincy award are Australia's Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid of India and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene. Ponting has actually been shortlisted in four categories as he is also in the running for player of the year in both forms of the game as well as overall player of the year.

In the Test player category, Ponting faces competition from Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf as well as the game's two finest spinners in Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and fellow Australian Shane Warne.

Muralitharan, Yousuf and Mike Hussey are the others shortlisted for the overall player of the year award while Hussey, Yuvraj Singh and Jayawardene are the other ODI nominees.

The awards will be announced on November 3 at an event at the Taj Land's End Hotel in Mumbai.
