Vaughan relishing England return

12 April 2012

Michael Vaughan was preparing to "start again" today as he prepares to play his first Test match for 18 months against West Indies in the second Test at Headingley.

It was early December 2005 in Lahore, with memories of a triumphant Ashes series still fresh in many minds, that Vaughan last led England in a Test.

"It's been a while - it's good to be back," he said. "The first day of any Test you have nerves. But when you have a little bit of a break like I have, it almost feels like I'm starting again."

Vaughan's chief objective is to put England one up after last week's rain-affected draw at Lord's, but a few runs would not go amiss either.

"I know I need some runs. I'm pretty confident I can get a few," he said. "You are always under pressure when you are playing international cricket but that's what I live for and that's why I put myself under pressure to play this week. I want to get out there and play."

When he does so, Vaughan is hoping for some help towards the England cause from strike bowler Steve Harmison who - not for the first time - raised plenty of eyebrows when his radar failed at Lord's.

The captain has seen enough of Harmison, though, to know that when the Durham fast bowler does get it right he is a match-winner at any level.

"Sometimes you can try too hard - and maybe he just tried too hard at Lord's," Vaughan added.

"He's just got to relax and bowl. We all know he can do it.

"I'm just looking forward to seeing him at his best here. He bowled beautifully for Durham against Yorkshire on a wicket which was just about 20 metres away. He's just got to try to relive the memory of what he did that day."
