Vaughan ruled out

13 April 2012

England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has been ruled out of first Test against New Zealand at Lord's with knee injury. Marcus Trescothick will captain the side.

Vaughan injured his right knee in net practice on Monday and was always going to be doubtful recover in time to lead his team at Lord's.

But England waited until today before accepting Vaughan would not be able to take his place in the line-up.

Somerset batsman Trescothick got the nod to fill in ahead of fellow contenders Mark Butcher and former captain Nasser Hussain.

It now remains to be seen who will replace Vaughan in the batting line-up, with the choice between Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood.

Strauss seems the most likely option after he was brought in as cover when Vaughan was injured, although one of the other batsmen could be moved up to open the innings to accommodate Collingwood.
