Vaughan set to prove fitness

12 April 2012

Injured England captain Michael Vaughan is confident of proving his fitness for the World Cup in next week's warm-up games in St Vincent.

The England squad fly to the West Indies on Friday and play against Bermuda on Monday and Australia four days later before facing New Zealand in their tournament opener on March 16.

The 32-year-old said: "I have spoken too much about injuries, I just want to play. I don't enjoy being on the physio's bed constantly being asked questions about my knee and my hamstring - I am feeling all right."

Vaughan has played only three of England's last 35 one-day internationals after his long-awaited comeback from knee surgery was curtailed when he tore a hamstring in the recent Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia.

Each side will be allowed to use 13 players in the warm-up games and Vaughan will ease himself back into action gently - but he has high hopes of playing a big role in the tournament.

He added: "There is no way I'll be playing a full part in the game against Bermuda, I have just got to try to build it up and I am hoping to get some time in the middle.

"These warm-up games are very much about trying to get everyone right."

England ended their tour to Australia, after losing the Ashes 5-0, on a high by winning the Commonwealth Bank series.

That unexpected success has lifted morale ahead of the World Cup and Vaughan believes the team will make an impact in the Caribbean.

He said: "I think we are in a lot better position than we were at the end of January, we have got an opportunity to create something special. We haven't really turned up at a World Cup since 1992 and it is about time we did."
