Venus back to winning ways

13 April 2012

Venus Williams, in her first match since winning Wimbledon, reached the quarter-finals of the Bank of the West Classic with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kristina Brandi. Williams admitted to being a little out-of-sorts, which showed in several double faults and foot faults.

The top seed, who won the event last year and has been a finalist three years running, won the last five games of her match against Brandi, but lost three match points.

"I was a little rusty and she hits a very flat ball," Williams said. "That gave her a lot of opportunities and more times to pass me. I hit a few aces, but I wasn't happy with my serves."

Williams will face Meghann Shaughnessy in the next round.
