Veron cleared for Anfield clash

13 April 2012

Juan Sebastian Veron has been cleared to play for Manchester United in their crunch Premiership clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

World governing body FIFA have ruled that the Argentine midfield player should be allowed to turn out for the Old Trafford outfit before jetting to South America for his country's World Cup qualifier against Peru.

It had been thought that under the five-day rule, Veron, along with other top European-based South Americans, would be unavailable for the weekend fixtures because of the final round of qualifying matches on November 7.

However, because of the late confirmation by the South American associations of the date for the games, FIFA have decided that it would be 'unfair to deprive clubs of the services of some of their top players'.

Football's world governing body ruled that the late decision to arrange the CONMEBOL qualifiers for November 7 led to an "unfair" scenario whereby clubs "would not have been able to foresee this situation when establishing their own fixtures."

A FIFA statement said: "The clubs concerned will not be asked to release their players prior to the upcoming weekend, but will instead be allowed to retain their services for the matches taking place on 3 and 4 November respectively."

Veron will, though, face a dash to South America to meet up with his team-mates for the match against Peru, which is somewhat of a non-event given Argentina have already qualified for next summer's finals in Japan and South Korea, as FIFA are set to insist that players are at the "immediate disposal" of their national teams after the weekend.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will now be able to call on his £28.1million record signing for the crunch Premiership clash, allaying fears that he would also have to make do without Veron as well as skipper Roy Keane, who has a knee injury.

The news means that Brazilians Roberto Carlos and Rivaldo will also be available to play in the Real Madrid-Barcelona match.
