Vialli wants Pennant to stay

13 April 2012

Watford manager Gianluca Vialli will today begin talks with Arsenal about extending the loan of winger Jermaine Pennant after his side stumbled to a goalless draw at Wimbledon last night.

Pennant's glimpses of skill were one of the few highlights of a miserable match at Selhurst Park, which virtually ended Watford's play-off hopes.

Watford are now 11 points away from the top six and have won just once in the last 10 games, but manager Vialli is determined to keep on fighting - and that means clinching a deal to keep Pennant at Vicarage Road.

He said: "Jermaine's deal runs out on Saturday, but we want him to stay. It's up to Arsenal and the boy, but we have an option to keep him and we want him a little longer. I will be talking to Arsenal and we will sort it out over the next few days."

Meanwhile, Wimbledon midfielder Michael Hughes, rushed to hospital on Saturday, has not broken his ankle as first feared. Relieved manager Terry Burton said: "It is just badly bruised."
