Voeckler loses way

13 April 2012

Tour de France leader Thomas Voeckler hopes he has learned his lesson after a testing day in the Alps.

The Europcar rider saw his advantage over Australian Cadel Evans cut to 1min 18 sec after a wayward descent on the 17th stage between Gap and Pinerolo saw him lose control and go off into a roadside driveway.

Voeckler said: "I lost time and if I'd been more calm, I could have finished with the favourites but I was a little bit too ambitious."

Today's 124mile stage to Galibier Serre-Chevalier - the second of three days' racing in the Alps - features the highest finish in the Tour's history at an altitude of 2,645metres.
