Wales pick keeper Myhill

12 April 2012

Wales have called up Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill for the first time in their squad to play Luxembourg in a friendly on March 26.

The 25-year-old former Aston Villa trainee was born in California, brought up in England and has a Welsh mother from Llangollen.

He has triple qualifications - but after hedging his bets on several occasions - and having already played for England Youth - he has decided to throw his lot in with John Toshack's squad.

Toshack said: "We have been trying to persuade him to play for us for a long time, and on a couple of previous occasions he has held back."

He added: "He can play for three countries, but maybe his Welsh mum has had a word."

Toshack has picked an experimental squad for the friendly in the Stade Josy Barthel stadium - including Doncaster pair Steve Roberts and Brian Stock.

Roberts has one cap, three years ago against Hungary - while Stock has played for the under-21s. Stockport defender Ashley Williams also comes in for the first time, while Portsmouth's Richard Duffy also wins a recall.

Swansea midfielder Owain Tudor Jones, so unlucky with injuries over the past three seasons, also gets a call-up.

Toshack, however, maintains that the under-21s' UEFA championship qualifier in Bosnia on the same night is more important - because the youngsters have a great chance of qualifying for the finals in Sweden 2009.

It means that senior internationals Wayne Hennessey and Chris Gunter have returned to the under-21s to boost the chances of Brian Flynn's side.
