Wallabies wait on Rogers' fate

Mat Rogers: involved in a nightclub incident

Australia star Mat Rogers discovers today if he will be banned from facing England at Twickenham on Saturday following a nightclub incident with a supporter in Edinburgh.

Rogers could be called before an Australian Rugby Union judicial hearing for breaking the Union's code of conduct.

In the summer, Elton Flatley was stood down from the Test with England in Brisbane after missing a training session and if the ARU decided to ignore Rogers' case, they could be accused of double standards.

An Australian fan alleged he was verbally abused and pushed by Rogers, although police found no evidence to substantiate the claim two weeks ago.

The Rogers situation has come at a terrible time for the beaten World Cup finalists as they lost outside half Stephen Larkham with a broken arm and centre Stirling Mortlock with a fractured cheekbone in the 31-17 win against Scotland on Saturday.

That gave them a 2-0 series win against the Scots but at a considerable price. If they also lose Rogers, the Wallabies will have to call up Matt Burke, who quit Test rugby to join Newcastle earlier this year.

Burke presented the Wallaby players with their jersey before the Scotland match on Saturday.

Now, he could be given one of his own.

Also causing coach Eddie Jones problems are the injuries to wing Clyde Rathbone and lock Justin Harrison.

Australia have only three reserve backs on tour and two of them - halfback Matt Henjak and utility back Drew Mitchell - have not trained in recent days after picking up injuries in the Australia A match against the French Barbarians in Paris.

The third is NSW centre Morgan Turinui, who remained on the tour after the Barbarians match.

If Mitchell and Henjak can prove their fitness this week, they will be the reserve contingent, alongside Turinui. If not, Burke is bound to be summoned from the north of England to fill the quota.

Jones said: "We'll have to consider Matt Burke. That's an option we will have to look at. But if Drew is right, we won't need Matt."
