Wasps forced to wait on £5m deal

London Wasps must wait another week to discover if Chris Wright's £5 million rescue plan has been successful, allowing the club to move to new training facilities and enter the rugby transfer market.

There will be a special general meeting of Loftus Road plc - the umbrella company for Wasps and Queens Park Rangers - on 16 May with two issues to be debated: Wright's offer to buy Wasps, and the purchase of Twyford Road, the training ground currently used by QPR.

The rugby section at Loftus Road was targeted by Rangers fans after Sunday's 36-31 Premiership play-off semi-final defeat by Bath.

There was a bitter exchange between the two sets of fans inside the ground and a small demonstration outside against Wright, who has stood down as QPR chairman but still funds the plc with £750,000 a month.

Nigel Melville, the Wasps director or rugby, said: "The fact that there were fans of the football section causing problems at the match left a bad taste. We gave up our training ground this season and the considerable sum generated by the sale went into the plc.

"We have trained at seven different venues this season and despite losing to Bath, we finished second to Leicester in the Premiership and that was a significant achievement by everyone associated with Wasps during a difficult time." Despite Wasps league success, Melville is determined to bring in new faces to help that European campaign.

They want to talk to Jason Leonard, the Lions, England and Harlequins prop, but must wait until 1 June - three months before his current contract runs out. Those talks will only take place if Leonard turns down the deal put forward by Quins.

Melville must also find a new centre to fill the void left by Rob Henderson who has joined Munster on a three year contract.
