Wasps launch cancer appeal

Chris Jones13 April 2012

London Wasps are using Sunday's home game with Bristol to try to help one of their young players win his fight against cancer.

Chris Mallett, a key member of Wasps' Under-21 squad, developed cancer 18 months ago - a form of Hodgkin's disease, called lymphoma - and is undergoing his sixth course of radiotherapy.

He is of mixed Caucasian-Nigerian background and has yet to find a match with the donations in the bone marrow donor banks.

The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust is holding an 'open clinic' donor recruitment session at Paray House School, on South Africa Road, next to Loftus Road Stadium, on Sunday before the game.

The clinic will be open from 12.30pm to 3.30pm for people to drop in and collect information about becoming a donor and possibly helping this talented young rugby player. A donor must be aged between 18 and 40 and be in good health. To be included on an international bone marrow donor panel, individuals must be willing to be potential donors for all patients.

On the pitch on Sunday, recalled Scotland wing Kenny Logan will have the kicking duties against Bristol as Alex King, the England outside-half, is still out with a groin injury.

Goal-kicking was the major reason Scotland could not stay in touch with England last weekend as Duncan Hodge misfired. Now Logan, whose record with Scotland has been patchy, will give them an extra option as they prepare to play Italy on 16 February.

Meanwhile, New Zealand prop Greg Feek has become the latest sportsman to be hit by deep-vein thrombosis after an overseas flight. Feek, 26, sustained a blood clot after the All Blacks' tour of Europe and Argentina in December.
