Watford remain locked in negotiations with Tottenham over the signing of Etienne Capoue after missing out on his team-mate Paulinho to Guangzhou Evergrande.

Capoue is one of several players Spurs are willing to let go this summer having struggled since joining from Toulouse for £9m two years ago.

Newly-promoted Watford want to bolster their squad with more experienced players after winning automatic promotion from the Championship in May.

But they are hoping to acquire the 26-year-old initially on a season-long loan with the option to buy next year.

Spurs would prefer to sell him outright during the close season and are looking to recoup as much of the £9m transfer fee they paid as possible.

Capoue has started just 28 matches for the north London club and is prepared to leave in order to get more first team football.
