We're better than class of 2005, says Gerrard

14 April 2012

Steven Gerrard reflected on Liverpool's proud European history on Wednesday and predicted the future could prove even brighter.

Pedigree and tradition have always been key factors at Anfield, but Gerrard believes there is good reason for looking forwards, rather than back, after Liverpool illustrated their progress under Rafa Benitez with another gripping Champions League semi-final win over Chelsea.

"We've underlined our great history but also shown our present and future can be even better," he said.

"For me, this win felt even better than the 2005 semi-final, when it was all about digging in and defending for our lives.

"We did that this time when we had to, but you could see there was more quality to our play throughout the team, from the goalkeeper and defence to the midfield and strikers.

"They never really hurt us and it showed how much we've improved in the last two years. We're far more dangerous now. What we are doing is not just adding to this club's great history but making a massive statement about our present and future."

Gerrard relished a return to his favoured central midfield role, saying: "I was made up to get a chance in there because I suppose I was half-expecting to start on the right again.

"The performance all the midfielders put in showed the manager got it spot on again tactically, as he always does on the big occasion.

"I know I can play in the middle against any side in the world and I'll always back my ability, but it's for the boss to decide how best to shape the team.

"I'm really proud of how all the boys performed and repaying the faith the manager showed in me by putting me in the centre makes it even better."

There was an inevitable post-script to the war of words between rival managers Benitez and Jose Mourinho as Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry claimed Chelsea could end up with only the Carling Cup to show for their pursuit of four trophies.

"I don't listen to what Mourinho says, but I guess when you've invested £500million it is a fantastic season to win the League Cup," he said.

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett can't wait for the final. "You bet I will be in Athens. I have seen some marvellous games already in Europe and that will be another," he said.

"I have worked in the States for many years but football in Europe is like any other sport I have seen — but on steroids!"

He added: "I am hugely impressed by the way myself and my family have been received here, it is truly wonderful. That is why I wanted to share the moment with the fans."
