Weir raring to go

12 April 2012

Rangers new boy David Weir cannot wait to get started after being reunited with Walter Smith at Ibrox.

After a day of talks with the Govan club, it was confirmed that the 36-year-old Scotland defender had joined the Light Blues from Everton until the end of the season. Weir told the club's official website: "I have obviously had the pleasure of working with Walter before (at Everton) and I can't wait to team up with him at Ibrox.

"This is a terrific move for me at this stage of my career and I am eager to get started. I have lined up against Rangers many times during my time at Falkirk and Hearts and I am very grateful to Walter for giving me the chance to play for such a massive club."

Smith's first signing since taking over as Rangers boss for the second time has been given a conditional seal of approval by the Secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, John Macmillan.

He said: "Under the circumstances, it's understandable that Walter has gone for Weir. We need someone with experience in the middle of the defence and we need some substance which has been lacking all season.

"Hopefully he can stabilise things and maybe he can bring on Karl Svensson at the same time. But I'm glad he is only signed until the end of the season. I was worried he would sign for 18 months or longer. It cannot be a long-term solution. We have to go for younger players in the future."
