Wenger annoyed at shot-shy Gunners

Southampton 3-2 Arsenal

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was flabbergasted that his side had managed to lose 3-2 to Southampton after dominating the game for long spells.

Matt Le Tissier struck an 88th minute volley to give the Saints a perfect end to their 103-year tenure at The Dell.

But after taking the lead twice with strikes from Ashley Cole and Frederik Ljungberg, Arsenal should have closed out the game.

Wenger said: "I don't how we managed to lose. The game should have been over a long, long time before Southampton scored the winner.

"But I think I've said that kind of thing several times this season."

Arsenal, of course, were a goal up against Liverpool in the FA Cup final before being overtaken by Michael Owen's late double and for long spells looked the masters at The Dell - despite barely breaking sweat.

Wenger, who confirmed he is ready to sign a new contract at Arsenal during the summer, added: "Our concentration was not as high as it might have been. It is different when you don't have something to go for.

"We picked ourselves up after the cup final defeat to get the point we needed for second place in the championship at Newcastle on Tuesday and if we had needed to win today I am sure we would have done.

"Our big regret this season is losing the championship so early, but now we must go away and do the right things in the summer and come back stronger."

Wenger added: "I will talk first to the board and then sign. Everything should be sorted out during the break."
