Wenger backs women officials

12 April 2012

Arsene Wenger maintains he would have "no complaints" about women officiating at Arsenal matches - providing they were up to the job.

Luton boss Mike Newell has apologised to assistant referee Amy Rayner after claiming last Saturday that the appointment of females amounted to "tokenism for politically-correct idiots" following his team's home defeat by QPR in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Arsenal manager Wenger feels the role of officiating at matches must be because of their ability alone, saying: "I am for quality. Are you a man, woman, yellow, red or blue? I do not care. You are in a job where the best have to be in charge."

He added: "If a referee who is a girl is better than a man, it is no problem. There is one lineswoman in France and she is fantastic - she got everything right."

However, Wenger noted: "But you have to accept also that just because you are a woman, that you are always right - if you are bad, you are bad.

"It is not because you are a woman, or sexist. It is down to quality, that is all."
