Wenger: I think Vieira will stay

Steve Stammers13 April 2012

Arsenal believe that Patrick Vieira will stay at Highbury.

The French World Cup-winner has been the subject of speculation all week.

There were reports that he flew to Spain for talks about a world record £50 million move to Real Madrid, but Standard Sport can reveal:

Both Vieira and Real have assured Arsenal that he has not had contact with the Spanish club.

Arsenal are going to offer Vieira a new contract at the end of this season, although he has two seasons left on his current deal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the speculation has occurred because "people are trying to destabilise the team and the club."

The Real bid, if it comes, will be nearer £30m than £50m.

Wenger believes Vieira will stay at Arsenal. He said: "Do I think he will be be here? Of course I do. I have not the slightest doubt about that."

Wenger's confident assertion will encourage Arsenal fans and comes as the London club prepare for Sunday's important Premiership match at Leeds. Arsenal are fourth in the table and Leeds are third.

Wenger added: "Patrick has a contract with us and if we wanted to sell him we would come out and say we wanted to sell him. We haven't and we don't. He is our player."
