Wenger: We can be better next season

Fulham can return to English football's top division after 33 years tomorrow night, without kicking a ball.

Victory over nearest rivals Blackburn last night has left Fulham on the brink of promotion to the Premiership.

They will be sure of going up if Bolton lose at home to Birmingham in tomorrow night's televised First Division fixture.

If Bolton take a point or more, then Fulham can clinch promotion by winning at struggling Huddersfield on Saturday.

Fulham' s Lee Clark hailed his side's 2-1 win at Blackburn as their "best result of the season".

Louis Saha scored Fulham's first goal and Sean Davis grabbed the last-minute winner.

Meanwhile, Millwall are on course for promotion from the Second Division after five seasons by grinding out an important 1-0 victory at home to LDV Vans Trophy finalists Port Vale.

And Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger promised that his side will be genuine Championship contenders next season.

Arsenal, 4-0 winners at Manchester City last night, know that Manchester United are just two victories away from clinching another Premiership crown with a month still to run in the current campaign.

However, Wenger said: "I hope we can make it closer next season. First we have to make sure that we finish in second place this time. But we want to make it closer next time if we can.

"You have to remember that we lost Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars last summer.

"We also had many new players like Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord, Lauren and Edu come in at the start of the season and it takes time for them to get used to English football.

"They will be more comfortable next season and I am sure that will help us."
