West Ham's foreign policy

Ken Dyer13 April 2012

West Ham will consider managerial candidates from outside English football if they cannot lure Alan Curbishley away from Charlton.

Curbishley, who remains West Ham's preferred choice, is away in Spain on a Charlton veterans team break, pondering his future.

West Ham have talked to the Premier League about their intentions and look certain to make an official approach to Charlton within the next few days. If Curbishley decides to stay at The Valley, West Ham will consider options north of the border or in Europe.

Charlton look likely to refuse their London rivals permission to talk to the Forest Gate-born Curbishley. He has an escape clause in his contract, however, and must then decide whether to force the issue.

Charlton may be prepared to offer him a huge wage rise to stay and, in those circumstances, West Ham would probably decide against entering into an auction for his services.

They would then look abroad, although Preston's David Moyes is one realistic alternative following his success at Deepdale. But he is unproven at a higher level.

The Upton Park club are also keen on retaining the services of former Watford manager Glenn Roeder, who has taken temporary charge since this week's shock departure of Harry Redknapp.
