Westwood has mountain to climb

13 April 2012

Lee Westwood was lost in admiration today - and it had nothing to do with golf.

On his first day back at work after two weeks off for a wrist injury, Westwood shot a one-under 70 in the first round of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

But his admiration was for those who had remembered to bring woolly hats to Crans-sur-Sierre which is 1,500m up in the Alps.

The start was delayed for 80 minutes this morning because of frost and the European No 1 said: "I was freezing - as cold as I've been in a long time.

"When I got to the course I was wearing five layers. A T-shirt, an ordinary shirt, tank top, jumper and waterproof jacket."

But only a cap covered his head, and he added: "I admire the forward planning of those who brought bobble hats with them."

The 28-year-old from Worksop also had a problem with mobile phones. He said: "I wish I had shares in Swiss Telecom.

"I lost count of the number of times a phone went off, but people did not seem to get the idea that if you merely ended a call rather than switching off the phone the person trying to phone them is going to ring straight back."

Two birdies in the last three holes, however, made it a fairly satisfactory return for Westwood, who finished five adrift of leader Ricardo Gonzalez of Argentina.

His six-under-par 65 gave him a one shot lead over Dane Thomas Bjorn, Germany's Thomas Gogele and Scots Dean Robertson and Gordon Brand Jnr, who were all back in the warm after their 66s.

Nick Faldo was two under after nine, and world No 4 Ernie Els and former US Masters champion Craig Stadler one under after 10.
