Will's testing day

Chris Jones13 April 2012

Will Greenwood will discover tomorrow if he has beaten the virus that has forced him to take a rest at the end of an arduous campaign.

England's Player of the Season battled through the debilitating effects of the illness to help Harlequins beat Leeds 40-16 on 3 May in what was thought to be a relegation decider.

It then emerged that First Division champions Rotherham would not be promoted, so with the threat of the drop removed Greenwood sat out the final league game of the season against Sale.

He has also been excused England duty for Sunday's non-cap match with the Barbarians at Twickenham.

However, Greenwood will be in the England team to face Argentina in Buenos Aires next month and his presence will add much-needed experience to the touring party.

Clive Woodward's side will go to South America without key players such as Martin Johnson, Lawrence Dallaglio, Jason Leonard, Austin Healey, Jason Robinson and Jonny Wilkinson.

Greenwood will see the England medical team for tests at the squad's Pennyhill Park base tomorrow and said: "If they say that I need another four or five days' rest then so be it. If I get the all-clear then I will start my preparation for the tour with Dave Reddin (the England fitness advisor).

"The virus has left me feeling tired and rest is the only cure. That's something I have been doing for the last three or four weeks.

"I haven't trained and this period has required a rethink about how I prepare for the Argentina trip - which is basically just one Test match - and then the start of next season. Instead of completing this season and having time off until July, I have had May off due to the illness which has laid me low.

"I will combine the Argentina tour with a training programme as there are still four weeks until the Test.

"When the Argentina trip is over I will take a two-week holiday with my wife and then pick up the training again for the start of the season."

The Player of the Season award recognised Greenwood's midfield excellence for England be said: "The award is great but it could have gone to any one of 25 players who turned out for England."

Chris Bell, the England Under-19 centre, has signed a two-year deal with NEC Harlequins after appearing in 14 Premiership games in his first season. But former England hooker Mark Regan, 30, has been told that he has no future with Bath.

The struggling Premiership club say they have offered 23 times-capped Regan "the opportunity to further his career elsewhere".
