Witter expects to fight on

12 April 2012

Junior Witter believes he still has a future in the ring at the age of 35 despite losing a world title challenge he had framed as a make-or-break fight.

British boxer Witter failed to regain the vacant WBC light-welterweight title he had lost in Nottingham 15 months ago when he handed American southpaw Devon Alexander the famous green belt after quitting at the end of the eighth round in California.

"I don't think it's my last fight," a dejected Witter said. "I've got to decide exactly where I'm going now and which way I go about it, sit down with (trainer) Dominic (Ingle), Brendan (Ingle) and (promoter) Mick Hennessy and we'll talk about where we actually go from here."

He added: "At the minute I just want to get away from it for a bit; see how my injury is, see how my eye heals up and go from there."

An emotional Alexander dedicated his victory to his late father, whom he credited with teaching him the importance of humility.

"Stay humble, that's what I did and that's why I'm wearing this belt right now," Alexander said.

"I trained hard every day, I didn't miss a day in the gym when I was an amateur, when I was a pro. I stayed dedicated and now I've got the green belt and the world title."

The new champion said he had come prepared to deal with anything the awkward, switch-hitting Witter might throw at him.

"We had a gameplan. We had an A game, a B game and a C game. If he was going to run we were going to stay on him; if we was going to box, if he was going to come forward, we had it all covered.

"I told him in the (pre-fight) press conference there was nothing he was going to do would stop me from walking out of the ring with the WBC title."
