This year’s Women’s World Cup saw England’s Lionesses almost bring the trophy home when they went head-to-head with Spain.

The game on Sunday, August 20 was won by the Spanish team after Captain Olga Carmona scored in the 29th minute at Stadium Australia.

Since then, many have wondered who the past winners of the Women’s World Cup were.

Here is a look at when the Women’s World Cup began and a comprehensive list of all the nations that won the exhilarating competition across the years.

When did the Women’s World Cup begin?

The international football competition hosted by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) started in 1991, with the first tournament being held in China. So the esteemed event has been held for 32 years now.

The competition is held every four years and one year after the men’s FifaWorld Cup.

Via a three-year qualification phase, countries across the globe compete for one of 31 slots, with the host nation’s team being automaticallly entered as the 32nd slot. Then, over a period of a month, these 32 teams face each other, hoping to progress.

This year’s competition was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, making it the first ever time for the Women’s World Cup to be hosted by two countries.
