Woodgate hails new boss

12 April 2012

Jonathan Woodgate admits he has a major job on his hands if he is to adequately replace Gareth Southgate at the heart of the Middlesbrough defence.

The 26-year-old was unveiled by Middlesbrough after completing a season-long loan move to the Riverside Stadium.

"Gareth has been a fantastic player for Middlesbrough.I thought it was a great decision when they bought him from Aston Villa, and he has lifted a cup as well. He has been a fantastic captain," the defender said. "All the fans know he has been a great player for Middlesbrough."

Woodgate arrived back in his home town determined to prove his fitness and ability once again after managing just 14 appearances for Real Madrid in two years because of injury problems.

He had several options after Fabio Capello sanctioned a loan move, but admitted his choice was not difficult.

Woodgate said: "I'm a Middlesbrough lad and you only want to play for Middlesbrough.

"It's the first time Middlesbrough have come for me, so I had to say, 'Yes'.

"I had to take as long as I did to make the decision, but in my eyes and in my opinion, I have made the right decision.

"I just wanted to be up north. I had options to stay in Spain and different clubs, but I wanted to come back home, so I am really happy to be back."
