Woods enjoys sweet smell of success

14 April 2012

Tiger Woods called his 12th major - and second at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago - "sweet, really sweet".

Woods carded a 68 to secure a five-stroke victory over fellow American Shaun Micheel at the USPGA Championship, equalling the 18-under-par championship record he shared with Bob May. Britain's Luke Donald, joint leader with Woods after the third round, did not have a birdie all day and with a 74 slipped to joint third alongside Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott.

Woods, who also won the British Open last month, said: "I probably didn't feel as comfortable as I looked. I made some bombs on the greens, putts you probably shouldn't make. I just had one of those days and honestly was just trying to get the ball on the green."

He added: "Starting the day it could have gone any which way, and winning on this course against this field I feel very fortunate."

Donald, meanwhile, told Sky Sports 2: "Too many putts were just missing the hole.

"It was one of those days but I will learn from it and be a stronger player after this.

"Tiger played very solidly, he made a fast start which made a big difference and he didn't do too much wrong. In the end he deserved to win."

Consolation for Donald and Garcia - runner-up to Woods on the same course in 1999 - was that they should be certain qualifiers for Europe's Ryder Cup team.

Micheel's performance came too late to get him into America's top 10 and a place in their Ryder Cup team.
